Art Meets Science exhibit–deadline approaching

OPEN CALL for the 2015 “Art Meets Science” exhibit at the MDI Biological Laboratory. Curated by Art in Public Spaces for the fourth year, this juried and invitational exhibit features artists whose work reflects the research interests of scientists at the MDI Biological Laboratory. This year the exhibit will be featuring forms, both 3D and 2D, in many mediums, all with the question of “Is it Art or is it Science?”

The exhibit began as a way to explore the ideas around “how does art meet science?”  Bonnie Gilfillan, who coordinates the exhibit at the lab and Annette Carvajal from Art in Public Spaces, LLC, have worked together on all four exhibits and it’s been a great partnership.  “The Art Meets Science exhibits at MDI Biological Laboratory have generated an enormous amount of interest,” says Gilfillan. “Last year our opening reception drew nearly 300 people, many of whom had never been in a research laboratory before. It’s enormously energizing for the artists and the scientists.”

Annette Carvajal, an artist herself who has personal connections to the world of science, curates the exhibit and organizes the collaborative teams of artists and lab researchers. “This annual exhibit brings together the arts community and the scientific community in a unique way,” says Carvajal. “Art Meets Science 2015 at the MDI Biological Laboratory will be an exciting exhibit about how both disciplines approach form and information, and we’ll look at where the intersections exist in the worlds of both science and art.

If you’d like to submit a piece for the exhibit, there is still time! Entries should meet one of the following criteria: 1) Work which asks, “Is it art or is it science?” or 2) Artwork from scientists who are also artists.  Submissions may be interpretive, representative, realistic, or conceptual, and in either 2d or 3D. Exhibit dates are July 1st through September 30th, 2015.

Deadline for application is March 15, 2015. For details, forms and more information see www.mdibl.org/events/art-meets-science or contact bonnie.gilfillan@mdibl.org.
